About One Phoenix Arts

One Phoenix Arts is an independent gallery in Nightcliff, Darwin. We work directly with artists and with community-owned art centres, and we buy and sell in line with the Indigenous Art Code — fair dealing, transparent provenance, and proper acknowledgement of the artist who made the work.

Why the story matters as much as the painting

A painting from the desert or from Arnhem Land is not decoration that happens to come from somewhere. It is a record — of country, of ancestry, of law, and of a particular person's right to hold and tell that record. Strip the story away and you are left with a pattern; keep the story with the work and you have something that means what it was made to mean.

That is why every piece we catalogue carries the artist's own account alongside it: what the work is about, who made it, what has changed in their life and their country, and how the two are connected. Where an artist has asked that part of a story stay private, we publish only what they have agreed to share. A short story is not a gap in our records — it is a boundary the artist drew.

How we buy and how we sell

The Aboriginal art market has a difficult history, and buyers are right to ask questions. Our practice is straightforward:

  • We buy directly. Works come from the artist or from a community-owned art centre, not from unnamed third parties.
  • Artists are paid properly and promptly, on terms explained in a language and manner the artist understands.
  • Provenance is recorded and disclosed. Ask us how any work came to the gallery and we will tell you plainly.
  • Every work is sold with a certificate of authenticity naming the artist, their language group, community, the year, medium and dimensions.
  • Copyright stays with the artist. Buying a painting buys the physical work, not the right to reproduce the image commercially.
  • We follow the principles of the Indigenous Art Code in dealing with artists and with buyers.

If a work in this gallery ever turns out not to be what we said it was, we will take it back and refund you in full. That has not happened, and this is how we intend to keep it that way.

Visiting us

The gallery is in Nightcliff, a short drive from the Darwin CBD. You are welcome to come and look without any obligation to buy — most people who walk in are simply curious, and that is a good reason to visit. If you are travelling and want to see something specific, call ahead and we will have it out and lit properly for you.

We also help with commissions, framing and stretching advice, packing for interstate and international freight, and valuations for insurance.

A note for first-time buyers

Buy what you keep coming back to. Size, region and reputation all affect price, but none of them is a reason to live with something you do not love. Ask about the story before you ask about the price — it usually tells you whether the work is right for you.
