About this country

The East Kimberley school centres on Warmun (Turkey Creek) in Gija country, close to the ranges of Purnululu.

What distinguishes this work is its material honesty: artists collect ochre, charcoal and clay from their own country and bind it with natural gum, so the painting is quite literally made of the place it depicts. Compositions tend toward broad, confident planes of colour, edged with a single line of white dots that holds the shape like a horizon.

The subject matter is often Ngarranggarni (Dreaming) country, but East Kimberley painting also carries hard historical memory — massacre sites, station life and the return to country — recorded with restraint and great dignity.
