The imagery suggests a topographical view of the colours and land-forms of the desert landscape, rockholes in the sandhills, creeks that carve lines in the landscape, flower patterns, ridges of mountain ranges and wild flowers.
The distinctive Walka style follows the artists tradition at Kaltjiti of painting design images that flow intuitively and instinctively on to canvas inspired by the rich tradition of aboriginal culture and connection to country. Maylene developed the tradition of telling a story by drawing in the sand. Knowledge is imparted by making marks in the sand as well as passing on traditional law and culture as well as about the country and daily life.
One Phoenix Arts acknowledges the Larrakia people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which our gallery stands, and pays respect to Elders past and present. We acknowledge the artists and their communities across the Northern Territory, the Kimberley and the deserts, who hold the stories in these works.
